About the Role 

We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join our growing engineering team. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the architecture, design, and implementation of our insights platform. You will work on designing and building scalable, efficient, and secure APIs and services, while collaborating closely with other teams to bring business requirements to life through clean, reliable code. 

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with strong backend engineering skills who is looking to have a meaningful impact on the sustainability of agriculture and food systems. 

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Design and build robust backend services: Develop scalable APIs and backend systems that power TRACT’s sustainability insights platform. 

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams: Work closely with product managers, data engineers, and frontend developers to ensure seamless integration and smooth data flow. 

  • Optimize for performance and reliability: Continuously improve the performance and efficiency of backend services, ensuring they can handle growing data volumes and user traffic. 

  • Write clean, maintainable, and secure code: Ensure best practices for coding standards, security, and data integrity are always followed. 

  • Monitor and troubleshoot: Proactively monitor system performance, debug issues, and troubleshoot bottlenecks or failures in the backend infrastructure. 

  • Contribute to architecture and design: Help shape the architecture of our backend systems and influence the future direction of the platform. 

  • Mentor and collaborate: Work as part of a collaborative team, providing mentorship and sharing knowledge with junior engineers. 

 

About You: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus. 

  • 5+ years of experience in backend engineering, with expertise in building scalable, performant web applications and APIs.  

  • Strong proficiency in Python, with experience in web frameworks like FastAPI or similar. 

  • Experience with relational databases like PostgreSQL, and familiarity with cloud-based data storage solutions such as Google BigQuery

  • Experience with API development and microservices architecture

  • Familiarity with cloud environments, especially Google Cloud services (e.g., Compute Engine, App Engine, Cloud Functions, Pub/Sub). 

  • Agile development experience, with a focus on iterative delivery and continuous improvement. 

  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code tools like Terraform is a plus. 

  • Problem-solving mindset: Ability to break down complex technical problems and deliver practical solutions. 

  • Excellent communicator: You are able to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and collaborate effectively within a cross-functional team. 

  • Passionate about continuous learning and improving your skills.
