Human Rights Hotspots: Mapping Social Risks in Supply Chains on TRACT
Corporate sustainability has always been a balancing act—juggling risks, complying with regulations, and seizing opportunities to create impact. But the lines between these priorities are blurring as regulation, risks, and societal pressure for responsible business all ramp up simultaneously.
This is especially true for human rights. Complex supply chains amidst increasing climate and economic shocks are driving up risks just as regulations are making it mandatory for companies to address them. In the European Union alone, initiatives like the EUDR (Regulation on Deforestation-free products), CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive), and CSDDD (Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive) are setting higher standards for transparency and accountability.
To meet this reality, companies need deep visibility into their supply chains. With TRACT, you can aggregate data across all supplier tiers and map your commodity flows using our traceability and data sharing tools. TRACT enhances your supply chain maps with social risk metrics, pinpointing the critical issues impacting your business across geographies and commodities.
Risk insights on TRACT are curated from trusted, independent data sources, like the UN, World Bank, research institutions and consortium of NGOs and government to form a comprehensive and robust look at risk in each geography. In partnership with Wageningen University & Research (WUR), you'll also access to over 45 country-commodity specific human rights risk scores, including those for coffee, soy and palm oil.
Using these risk scores, you can leapfrog arduous, time-consuming risk scoping projects and get started on:
Being compliant with EUDR and CSDDD: Meet your obligations to identify legal and human rights risks in your supply chain and create effective mitigation plans.
Future-proofing business: Gain clarity on the major risks so that you know who to engage and where to focus.
Creating impact: Target supply chains where you can reduce risks and make the greatest difference in improving human rights.
The human rights risk scores are calculated using a comprehensive methodology combining quantitative and qualitative data on various national and subnational indicators with insights from an in-depth literature review.
“We are committed to transparency, rigorous validation and continuous improvement. Our goal is to provide risk scores that meet the highest standards of accuracy and trustworthiness. By doing so, we aim to empower businesses to take meaningful steps toward making their supply chains more sustainable and inclusive,” says Miriam Vreman, WUR’s project leader and researcher of Human Rights and Social Sustainability.
TRACT values transparency too – this methodology is public, fostering peer review, open debate and a level playing field. The scores also benefit the sector overall by facilitating learning from lower-risk areas and serving as benchmarks.
The risk scores on TRACT are grounded in our participatory process of aligning the industry through Technical Working Groups and builds on our work to align the world’s largest agricultural and food companies on common metrics for child protection and forced labour.
Together, WUR and TRACT deliver actionable and dependable risk insights, helping businesses quickly focus on hotspot areas, engage suppliers, and transform supply chains for the better.
